About the Project

What is ARENA Sports Index?

ARENA is a financial market simulator built on the real economics of professional sports franchises — a sports market index where the underlying assets are teams, not companies.

The Concept

Professional sports franchises are multi-billion dollar businesses that are bought, sold, and valued like any major corporation — yet most fans have no visibility into the underlying economics. ARENA bridges that gap.

By assigning each team a simulated share price derived from real-world valuation data (Forbes, Sportico) and applying adjustment factors for revenue, market size, stadium age, and performance, ARENA creates a living, breathing financial market where sports business economics can be explored, analyzed, and simulated.

Who It Is For

  • Sports business students and researchers
  • Finance professionals with a passion for sports
  • Fantasy sports players who want a different angle
  • Anyone curious about what their favorite team is actually worth
  • Journalists covering sports economics

Methodology

How valuations are calculated and how the index is constructed.

1Team Valuation Calculation

Each team's ARENA-adjusted valuation starts from the midpoint of the Forbes and Sportico estimates for that franchise. We then apply a composite adjustment multiplier built from four factors:

Revenue Factor30%

Total annual revenue relative to league average. Teams generating above-average revenue receive a positive multiplier.

Market Size Factor25%

Metropolitan statistical area (MSA) population of the team's home market. Larger markets command a premium.

Stadium/Venue Age20%

Newer venues generate more premium revenue streams. Teams with venues under 10 years old receive a positive adjustment.

On-Field Performance25%

Rolling 3-year win percentage and playoff appearance rate relative to league average. Winning franchises attract higher valuations.

2Index Construction

The ARENA Sports Index uses a market-capitalization weighted methodology — the same approach used by major equity indices worldwide.

Market Cap

Each team's ARENA-adjusted valuation equals its total "market cap." This is divided by 10 million simulated outstanding shares to produce a per-share price.

Float Adjustment

We apply a float adjustment factor to exclude ownership stakes held by leagues or other teams, consistent with how equity indices handle cross-holdings.

Divisor Methodology

The index value equals the sum of all float-adjusted market caps divided by a proprietary divisor. The divisor is maintained to ensure continuity when teams enter/exit the index or undergo rebalancing events.

Rebalancing

The ARENA Sports Index is rebalanced annually when new valuation data is published, and on an ad-hoc basis when a franchise is sold, relocated, or a new expansion team is added.

Data Sources

ARENA aggregates data from the most respected sources in sports finance.

Forbes Valuations

Annual (Q1)

Forbes publishes annual "Business of" franchise valuation reports for NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and soccer. These reports have been published for over 25 years and represent the most widely cited independent franchise valuations.

Sportico

Annual (Q1–Q2)

Sportico is a sports business media company that publishes its own independent franchise valuations using a proprietary model. Sportico's estimates often differ from Forbes and provide a useful cross-check.

League Official Sources

Real-time / Seasonal

Attendance figures, win/loss records, broadcast contract values, and stadium data are sourced from official league statistical feeds and publicly filed documents.

Public Financial Disclosures

Quarterly / Annual

For publicly traded team ownership groups (e.g., MSG Sports, Atlanta Braves Holdings), SEC filings provide additional financial data used to validate valuation models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the project.

Is this real investing?+

No. The ARENA Sports Index is a simulation and information product only. You cannot actually purchase shares in sports teams through this platform. Nothing on this site constitutes financial advice, investment advice, or a solicitation to buy or sell any securities. The "share prices" and portfolio features are entirely simulated and educational in nature.

Where does the valuation data come from?+

Primary valuation data is sourced from Forbes annual franchise valuations and Sportico's independent franchise value estimates. These are the two most widely cited independent valuation methodologies in the sports business world. We blend both estimates and apply our own adjustment factors (see Methodology) to derive an ARENA-adjusted figure.

How often is data updated?+

The underlying team valuation data is updated annually when Forbes and Sportico publish their franchise value reports (typically Q1 each year). Simulated daily price movements are generated algorithmically based on recent sports-business news signals, win/loss records, stadium deals, and broadcast contract milestones. The page revalidates every hour.

What is the ARENA Sports Index value?+

The ARENA Sports Index is a market-cap weighted composite index of the top professional sports franchise valuations across all tracked leagues. Its value is derived by summing the float-adjusted market caps of all constituents and dividing by a proprietary divisor maintained to keep the index continuous across rebalancing events. The base value of 1,000 was set at the index's inception date.

How are simulated share prices calculated?+

Each team's total "market cap" equals its ARENA-adjusted valuation. This is divided by a fixed number of simulated outstanding shares (10 million per franchise) to produce a per-share price. Daily percentage changes are simulated using a mean-reverting random walk model seeded with real-world news signals — so a team signing a new stadium deal will see a positive price drift.

Which leagues are covered?+

Currently tracked leagues: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, English Premier League (EPL), Major League Soccer (MLS), Formula 1 (constructor teams), PWHL, and WNBA. Additional leagues and international competitions are planned for future updates.

Can I export or use the data?+

The ARENA Sports Index data is provided for personal, non-commercial informational use. Commercial redistribution, scraping, or use of the data in downstream products without written permission is not permitted. The underlying Forbes and Sportico valuations are the intellectual property of their respective publishers.
